HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-1884 - Establishing a policy for erection of "Don't Drink and Drive" signsCITY OF MARYSVILLE Marysville,Washington RESOLUTION NO.1884 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF MARYSVILLE ESTABLISHING A POLICY FOR ERECTION OF "DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE"SIGNS. WHEREAS,drinking and driving and alcohol-related traffic offenses are a major cause of serious traffic and vehicular- pedestrian accidents;and WHEREAS,the City Council of the City of Marysville finds it to be in the public interest to inform and educate the public about the hazards associated with drinking and driving;and WHEREAS,the City Council of the City of Marysville wishes to adopt a policy concerning the erection of "Don't Drink and Drive"signs along public rights of way;NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MARYSVILLE,WASHINGTON AS FOLLOWS: 1.Upon request to the City Administrator by an immediate family member,the City may cause a "Don't Drink and Drive"sign to be erected in the public right of way near the location where a fatality related to a drinking and driving incident occurred. 2.Such signs may be erected only where: a.A driver of a vehicle has plead guilty to or been convicted of an alcohol-related traffic offense;and b.The alcohol-related traffic offense resulted in a fatality;and c.A sign can be erected in a location which in the opinion of the City Engineer does not pose an impediment to traffic or pedestrian safety,or does not unreasonably impact the adjacent property owner. 3.The City shall,whenever possible,seek contributions to defray the cost of purchasing and placement of such signs. 4.The immediate family of a victim of an traffic offense may request that a "Please Don't sign contain language such as "In memory of RESOLUTION - 1 /mv/dont.res alcohol-related Drink and Drive" " ~-------------------------------------------------- ~PASSED by the City Council and APPROVED by the Mayor this/1-1 day of May,1998.
