A RESOLUTION ESTABLISIDNG AN EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION AND
RECOGNITION POLICY
WHEREAS,the CITY OF MARYSVILLE focuses on a partnership between the
public, the City Council and City employees.The City of Marysville recognizes the
importance ofthis teamwork and emphasizes the value of the individuals who contribute to
the process of maintaining and improving the quality of service in our city; and
WHEREAS,in recognition of this ongoing partnership,the CITY OF MARYSVILLE
hereby establishes the CITY OF MARYSVILLE EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION AND
RECOGNITION POLICY.NOW THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF MARYSVILLE AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1.Purpose
The City of Marysville recognizes that its employees are the City's most important
asset and resource for providing quality public services to the citizens of Marysville.The
City also recognizes the tradition of hard and often exemplary work and dedication to public
service among its employees.The City wishes to reinforce exemplary performance and
behavior and to motivate employees to excel in the provision of service to the public;and to
recognize and express its appreciation to its employees,both individually and as teams.
Section 2.Policy
The City appreciates and recognizes the value of exceptional employee performance
that contributes to improved service, quality,productivity,and/or actions that are beneficial
to the community.This policy is established to provide a means of honoring employees,both
individuals and teams, for accumulated years of service and exceptional performance and
behavior both in the workplace and in our community.
Section 3.Selection Committee
Nominations will be reviewed by a special committee comprised of City employees
representing several departments,varying levels of the organization,and both represented
and non-represented employees.

Section 4.Award Categories
The Appreciation and Recognition Policy is structured to recognize a wide variety of
achievements on the part of the employees,team efforts and the contributions made by
individuals to the successful operation of City services.Individuals and teams are eligible to
be nominated for and to receive recognition in the following categories:
A.Recognition of Continuous Service.Employees with permanent status shall be
recognized for their years of service for the City.Employees shall receive a service
award for the following years of completed service:5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,and 45.
B.Recognition of Retirement.An employee retiring from service with the City of
Marysville may receive this award.
C.Excellence in Public Service.
•Extraordinary effort and/or continuous excellence in service to the public
•Implementation of innovative and practical new work methods,programs or cost-
saving solutions that have an substantial impact on improving service and efficiency
•Outstanding professionalism and competence in completion or implementation of a
project with significant benefit to the community or organization
•Consistent and outstanding performance at work (i.e,employee regularly finds
"better-ways-to-do-it",is a problem-solver,expediter,assists others do their jobs
better or serves as mentor,teacher or role model for others)
•Exceptional community volunteerism with a positive impact on the lives of others
•Heroism in response to an emergency situation
•Other meritorious performance or actions of a similar nature
D.Safety Award.Employees may be recognized for excellent safety records and/or an act
that results in an improved City safety program.
E.Other categories of awards may be added or deleted as deemed appropriate by the
Selection Committee.The Selection Committee will determine and announce criteria for
any added category.
Section 5.Nominations
A co-worker,supervisor,Department Director or citizen may nominate an employee
(or group of employees)at any time. A written nomination form noting the recommendation
for the award and highlighting the positive contribution(s)ofthe action are to be submitted to
the employee's Department Director.The Department Director shall present and discuss the
nomination with the Selection Committee.The Committee shall make a recommendation to
the Chief Administrative Officer for their consideration and action.The final decision to
recognize an employee under this program shall be as determined by the Mayor and Chief
Administrative Officer.Awards shall generally be presented at a department staff meeting
and/or a City Council Meeting.

The Mayor and Chief Administrative Officer may also, at their discretion,present an
individual employee with a gift or gift certificate or a group of employees with a group-
oriented recognition such as a pizza lunch, ice cream feed, etc.
Section 6.Employee Appreciation/Award Event(s)
All employees of the City of Marysville and the City Council will be invited to attend
the appreciation/award event(s)at the City's expense The employee's spouses,guests and
interested citizens will be invited to attend at their own expense.
Section 7.Allowable Expenses
Expenditures for employee recognition must come from previously appropriated
funds, i.e.,affordable within the adopted budget. Purchases and all other related accounting
activities must be in compliance with relevant City procedures in effect. The value of the
award or recognition is to be based on the contribution made to the City and/or community
and shall not exceed the amount determined in the annual budget.
Section 8.Publicity
Nominations for awards will be made public at the close of the nomination period.
Awards recipients will be announced and every attempt will be made to publicize the
presentation of an award.
Section 9.Funding
Funding for the Citywide Employee Appreciation and Recognition Policy shall be
carried in the Human Resources budget.
