A RESOLUTION URGING FEDERAL FINANCIAL SUPPORT
FOR LOCAL PUBLIC HEALTH
WHEREAS,HINI Influenza (Swine Flu) may present a serious health threat to the United
States this coming fall including the potential of up to as many as 1.8 million hospitalizations
and 90,000 deaths, and
WHEREAS,families in the City of Marysville may be exposed to the same significant health
risks from HINI Influenza,and
WHEREAS,the Snohomish Health District is working diligently to prepare the entire
Snohomish County population including residents of the City of Marysville for the upcoming
influenza season, and
WHEREAS,the Snohomish Health District is coordinating efforts with local health care
providers,hospitals,tribes,emergency responders,departments of emergency management,the
State of Washington Department of Health,and the U.S.Centers for Disease Control and Health
Promotion,and
WHEREAS,while the Snohomish Health District is receiving some funds for planning and
response to HINI Influenza,because of the significant economic downturn the Snohomish
Health District has less funding to provide for public health in general including responding to
HINI Influenza,and
WHEREAS,city officials are elected to protect the health and welfare of their constituents,and
WHEREAS,the local public health system is responsible for assuring the public's health,but has
been underfunded,faces further funding reductions,and requires additional resources to meet
public expectations,
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Marysville supports federal funding
for local public health in general and specifically federal funding for the Snohomish Health
District to plan,prepare and respond to the upcoming HINI Influenza epidemic,and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the City of Marysville strongly urges federal elected
officials to assure that sufficient funding is made available to the Snohomish Health District.
