HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-2510 - Recognizing City of Marysville as a Purple Heart CityCITY OF MARYSVILLE Marysville, Washington RESOLUTION NO. 25lO A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MARYSVILLE, WASHINGTON, RECOGNIZING CITY MARYSVILLE AS A PURPLE HEART CITY. WHEREAS, City of Marysville has a proud history of supporting our active military and veteran population; and WHEREAS, the Purple Heart Medal is the oldest military decoration in present use and was initially created as a Badge of Military Merit by General George Washington in 1782; and WHEREAS, the Purple Heart Medal was the first award made available to the common soldier and is specifically awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces who have been wounded in combat or have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms being killed in action against a declared enemy of the United States of America; and WHEREAS, the mission of the Military Order of Purple Heart is to foster an environment of goodwill among combat-wounded veterans and their families, promote patriotism, support legislative initiatives, and most importantly, to make sure that we never forget the sacrifices of our military service men and women: and WHEREAS. City of Maryville has a large veteran population with many of its veterans being Purple Heart recipients: and WHEREAS, U.S. Interstate 5 in Washington, which services Snohomish County, is now memorialized as part of the National Purple Heart Trail, and proudly joins Thurston County and Lewis County as the third Purple Heart County in Washington State; and WHEREAS, City of Marysville appreciates the sacrifices of all of its military veterans, combat veterans. Purple Heart recipients, and their families for the sacrifices that they have made in defending our freedoms and wants to express and honor them; NOW, THEREFORE. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MARYSVILLE that the Marysville City Council does hereby recognize City of Marysville as a Purple Heart City and encourages residents and businesses of Snohomish County to show their appreciation for the sacrifices Purple Heart recipients have made in defending our freedoms, to acknowledge their courage, and to show them the honor and support they have earned.
